Differing from individualized health care that you may receive in a clinic or hospital setting, Public Health’s primary focus is to serve large population groups through a broad scope of service. Public Health emphasizes prevention and the inherent benefits that come from living a healthy lifestyle.
- Bike Helmet Safety Education - Staff provide information about how to choose the correct helmet for you or your child.
- Blood Pressure Checks - Blood pressure can be checked via appointment. Blood pressure is an indicator of future health problems; high blood pressure puts extra strain on your heart.
- Breastfeeding Resources - A variety of services and best practices are available for mothers and their new children.
- Car Safety Seat Program - Studies show more than 80% of car seats are used incorrectly. Staff will evaluate your car seat and provide education and best practices.
- Diabetes Screening - Screenings are conducted monthly at Senior Citizen Clinics and in the office.
- Emergency Preparedness - Regional staff work with community partners as part of local emergency response team. Information about the Southwest Central Emergency Preparedness and Response region is available online.
- Environmental Health Services - Coordinated services with Custer District Health Unit Environmental Health Practitioner for water, sewer, health hazard abatement issues, and public nuisances.
- Fit Testing - Regional staff can provide testing or equipment for testing personal protective equipment (PPE) for use in the event of an emergency. While this is a free service, your organization must provide the equipment utilized for the training. - Flu Shots - This immunization practice remains the most successful way to assure your body will be resistant to influenza, and if you do show symptoms, they are normally less severe. Call for an appointment during flu season.
- Foot Care - Services are available for senior citizens from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the following communities: Braddock on the first Monday of the month, Linton on the first Tuesday of the month, Strasburg on the first Wednesday of the month, Hazelton on the first Friday of the month, and Hague on the second Thursday of the month. Also available at public health via appointment.
- Healthy Baby Clinic - The clinic is offered on the 1st Monday of the month from 12-4 p.m. and the 3rd Thursday from 2-6 p.m. at the Public Health office. Nurses will weigh and measure your infant, answer questions about infant growth and development, infant feeding, and check car seats. Immunizations can also be given if indicated.
- Health Fair - This activity is conducted for KEM Electric Co-op Annual Meeting or other special community events.
- Health Tracks (Child Health Screening) - A variety of services comprise this preventative health program for newborns and individuals up to the age of 21 years old who are enrolled in North Dakota Medicaid. Health assessments include hearing and vision screening, developmental testing, speech evaluation, mental health assessment, dental assessment, orthodontic referral, supportive counseling, immunization status review and update, physical assessment, and more.
- Home Health - In-home nursing services for elderly or disabled individuals as needed.
- Immunization Clinic - Offered on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 8AM-6PM or by appointment.
- Immunizations - A number of immunizations (many are required for school attendance) are available for infants and children through the age of 18.
- Medication Setup - Available in home or at the public health office. Contact our office for more information.
- Member of Child Protection Team and County Interagency Team - Interagency is a group of multi-discipline agencies that work together to provide programs/services for Emmons County residents.
- Newborn Home Visits - Ensure the health of the newborn with visits to your home.
- Nutrition Education - Staff will cover a variety of nutrition-based areas including healthy lifestyle choices, community and worksite support for breastfeeding, diabetes prevention, and more.
- Onsite Septic System License, Permit & Inspection Program - In 2017, Emmons County Board of Health adopted a statewide septic system code. This requires that all installers are licensed, and every new or updated septic system is permitted and inspected. - PPE Training - Regional staff are certified as Level C Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) instructors and are trained in donning and doffing Level C PPE and Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) systems. - Preschool Education Programs and Screenings - This program includes hearing, speech, developmental screening, physical assessment, including oral screening for children ages 4-5, starting in April through August, 2018. Call for an appointment.
- Rapid Inspection - May include ear checks and nursing assessment by appointment.
- School Health - Staff will provide hearing screenings, health education and resources for schools including, but not limited to, immunizations, puberty talks, flu shots, and more.
- Tobacco Prevention and Screening - Staff provides resources that will aid in the cessation of, and prevention of using, products that contain tobacco. Information is also provided for NDQuits, the state of North Dakota’s tobacco cessation/prevention program.
- Tuberculosis Testing and Management - This program helps test for a potentially deadly respiratory infection that can be highly contagious.
- West Nile Program - Surveillance throughout the county and education of the disease and vector control.
- WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program - A federal nutrition program that provides nutrition information, breastfeeding information and support, access to nutritious foods, health screenings and referrals to other services. Call (701) 254-4030 for more information.
- Worksite Wellness - Emmons County Public Health is the coordinator for County employees and the Emmons County Sheriff ’s Department.
- Youth Education Programs - First aid and bicycle safety, among other activities, available upon request.
